Nancy Kimpel, 1940-2011

Nancy Kimpel was a beautiful person, a pillar of her family and community, and a shining star of the Milwaukee Art Quilters.

Her departure left behind a huge collection of special fabrics she had designed.  The complex cloth creations and texture-filled hand-dyes, many of which she used in her award-winning art quilts, filled her studio.

Her husband invited Nancy’s friends to go through the fabrics, with an eye toward using them to honor Nancy.  Mary Ellen Heus proposed a grab bag event, and, with the help of Laura Krasinski, assembled groups of Nancy’s special fabrics to be hidden inside each bag.  The Milwaukee Art Quilters, each taking a bag, eagerly took on the challenge.

This show is the result: a special tribute to the creativity and joy of living that Nancy personified.  Each quilt uses Nancy’s fabrics, swatches of which are shown on title cards next to each art work, to laud a great lady.

Walls of Wittenberg – Line of Design Exhibit

Our “Connecting Thread – a Line of Design” challenge was displayed at the W.O.W. gallery in Wittenberg, WI from January 19th to February 10th, 2013. This group of quilts is hung in a unique way. The rules stated that the each quilt needed to be 36″ square with a red line running through it that entered and exited  the sides of the quilt either 12″ from the top or bottom edge. Those were the only criteria the fiber art pieces had in common and the quilts are hung staggered so the “lines” in between remain horizontal. This resulted in a very diverse collection of quilts. The gallery space in Wittenberg was a delightful venue. Here are a few pictures from the exhibit:

Gallery Show in Plymouth Wisconsin

The Milwaukee Art Quilters will be having a gallery show in Plymouth, WI.  The show opens August 12, 2011 at Gallery 110 North/Plymouth Arts. I believe the show runs through the first week of October.
The Exhibit includes quilts from 2 of our challenges:

“The Blues”; 8 of these quilts just returned from being exhibited at the  AQS show in Knoxville, TN.

And “Name That Tune”; a challenge we won a top award with at the AQS show in Nashville a few years back. It now includes additional quilts from some of our newer members.

There will be about 50 quilts in the Plymouth show.
The show opens the same day as Cheese Capital Jazz Crawl For the Arts.
Here is the URL for the gallery:

I’m including the photos of the 8 quilts that were in the AQS Knoxville show.
